She moved from Kragelund to Sinding when she was 14 years old (30 April 1860) to work for a family there. She was confirmed in Sinding that same month.
She had dark black hair when she was young, and olive skin. Asta Nielsen, her granddaughter, wonders whether her ancestors were "Skovloverne", workers from Germany or Spain who spent time in this area of Danmark during the 1700-1800s.
