Barbara Lee Douglas Rasmussen, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, in the El Reno Cemetery. Viewing will be at Bill Merritt Funeral Service, 6201 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany.
Barbara was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Wanette, to Edgar and Pearl (Upton) Douglas. She graduated from El Reno High School in 1941 and that same year married Darwin Blanc of El Reno. They had three children and farmed southwest of El Reno. After completing Hill's Business College in 1953, she worked for C.R. Anthony General Offices, Aero Design and Engineering, Tinker Air Force Base and Oklahoma State Department of Health in various secretarial and administrative assistant positions.
In 1956 she married Peter A. Rasmussen of Oklahoma City. She retired in 1986. For over 40 years, Barbara was actively involved with Oklahoma Writers Association, The Poetry Society of Oklahoma and The International and Oklahoma Graphoanalysis (handwriting analysis) Societies. Over a period of several decades she served as Oklahoma state president, vice president and secretary of all three organizations as well as served in leadership roles in their Oklahoma City chapters. She was often a moderator and presenter at seminars, conferences and conventions at the local, state and national levels. In her later years she was a sponsor/patron of poetry contests for the Poetry Society of Oklahoma. Her poems were published in numerous anthologies and poetry magazines including the Anthology of Oklahoma Poetry-Bi-Centennial Edition in 1996 and The Poetry Society of Oklahoma's 70th Anniversary Anthology in 2004. She presented poetry readings of her poems for civic organizations and on television shows. Many of her poems were about her children and her parents.
As a certified graphoanalysist, she practiced, taught and wrote about graphoanalysis. In addition to her private practice, she taught classes at the Oklahoma City YMCA and wrote columns and articles for The Oklahoma City Times, The Oklahoma Journal and The Tinker Take Off. She was also a featured speaker for numerous civic organizations in the greater Oklahoma City area. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and she and her husband, Pete, were members of Alka-Var Formal Dance Club. They also enjoyed formal dances at Lakeview Country Club. Barbara was well known for her beautiful flower gardens and her love for her pets. She especially enjoyed hosting gatherings and dinners for family and friends on holidays, special occasions and when children and grandchildren were visiting. Her annual outdoor fall gathering became a favorite.
Barbara is survived by daughters, Darlita Judith Blanc of Wide Ruins, Ariz., and Betty Anita Magott and husband, Felix of Harrah; a son, Curtis Darwin Blanc and wife, Linda of El Reno; two sisters, Robbie Summers of Elk City and Dorthea Paulk of Calumet.
