He was a school teacher and took his teaching exam at Blågård Seminary in 1873. He was the teacher at Hvam and Knudstrup secondary schools and in 1876 became a substitute teacher in Thorning. At that time he lived in Impgård. The same year he applied at Hersom Old School and was employed there starting on 11 Dec 1876. (Hersom Old School was built in 1792. Six tdr land belonged to the school, which could hold 2 cows and 1 horse.) Hans Christian was also the church singer in Hersom.
In 1889 a new school was built in the middle of the parish and the family moved there the same year. In 1897 HChr Rasmussen was released on leave starting on December 31 due to illness, and the family moved to Oustrup in Thorning Parish, where they purchased a farm. (Later owners were Rasmus Holm and Jens Christian Ravn). The farm was sold on 27 Oct 1910, and they moved to a house in Almtoft. Hans Christian was at one time the church singer in Hørup.
There were 10 children in the marriage.
